Saturday, November 30th, 2024 (6th Reiwa).

On November 21st, I visited the Tower of the Sun.
What I felt when I stood facing the Tower of the Sun was that it represents the very spirit of the Japanese people.

On November 22nd, I visited Ohtaki (Ō Falls) in Mino park(Japanese). Even though it was a Friday, the Ohtaki was crowded with people coming to see the autumn leaves.
On November 24th, I went to the concert "Cimarron Japan Tour 2024”, organized by Min-On. It was held to celebrate the following milestones: 70th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between Japan and Colombia, 95th anniversary of Japanese-Colombian immigration, and the 205th anniversary of the founding of Greater Colombia by Simon Bolivar, the “Father of South American Liberation."
The slogan of Soka Gakkai in 2025 is “Year of soaring Higher Towards a Youthful Soka Gakkai Worldwide”.

Saturday, October 5th, was a hot and humid day. This year, I went to my grandson's kindergarten sports day.
On October 6th, I went to the concert "Asian Pops 2024" organized by Min-On.

Monday Sept 23rd, 2024 (6th Reiwa).

On August 31st, I attended the “G.O.B. Japan Tour 2024” (organized by Min-on). A group of seven members was made up of players of the traditional Italian ocarina (an ocarina septet, Gruppo Ocarinistico Budriese). Until I heard it with my own ears, I never imagined that the seven types of ocarinas could play such beautiful harmonies.

On September 7th, I participated in the "MIN-ON Kids Festa" (sponsored by Min-On) with my daughter and 4-year-old grandson. The percussion ensemble with the other participants reminded me that life and rhythm are closely related.

On September 15th, I attended “Duplessy & World Strings” (organized by Min-on). It was my first experience to experience a session with four kinds of string instruments (guitar, violin, erhu, and morin khuur). The performers themselves were having so much fun that it was clear to the audience.
The part before the paragraph described in August was: "This passage is saying that if in a single moment of life we exhaust the pains and trials of millions of kalpas, then instant after instant there will arise in us the three Buddha bodies with which we are eternally endowed." (The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, p. 214). This makes me realise the need for more faith, but it's actually very difficult for me. I feel like I'm making progress, checking each step every day.

Monday August 19th, 2024 (6th Reiwa)

On July 24th, I went to the city of Yokohama. It had been three years since we last visited for the wedding of our youngest daughter in October. This time, I was going to visit her family, but an unfortunate inconvenience arose unexpectedly. Instead, I took a tour of the naval port at Yokosuka Naval Base (the photo shows the KUMANO, a Mogami-class frigate).
On August 5th, I attended the "Maria Seiren concert" (organized by Min-on). The photo on the left was taken by me during the curtain call with her permission, so the blurriness of the photo is my responsibility.
The heatwave with temperatures exceeding 35 degrees seems to be coming to an end after 26 consecutive days. But chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is not influenced directly by the environment. As you know well, because Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is just such a diligent practice (The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, p. 214).

Sunday July 14th, 2024 (6th Reiwa)

On July 7th, I attended the “Santrofi Japan Tour 2024” (held by Min-on). Through their music, I felt deeply that rhythm is a universal language for humanity, and that living itself is rhythm. Rhythm makes me feel alive. It is wonderful to live feeling the rhythm. I was reminded of these truths.

My mentor said the following: Mr. Ikeda described the Buddhist law--the inherent power of life, which Nichiren defined as Nam-myoho-renge-kyo--as "the fundamental power activating and moving all stars, planets, and other celestial bodies in the universe." Members of the SGI "embrace faith in this great Mystic Law and chant the most powerful and supreme rhythm of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo." (from Developing a Robust, Victorious Life: Daisaku Ikeda Addresses the January Leaders Meeting, January 9, 2010.)

Sunday June 16th, 2024 (6th Reiwa).

On June 5th, I attended Vieira Amaral's piano concert for the 30th anniversary of his Japan tour (held by Min-on). I watched his fingers, which produced the music that fascinated me throughout the concert without blinking. It was my first time experiencing such piano music with deep emotion. What impressed me? Perhaps something conveyed by his state of life? In any case, he certainly gave me an excellent experience.
The rainy season (stagnation of the rainy season front) is about to begin in this part of Japan. On rainy days, I do not want to go out. As the saying goes, 'Sei-kou u-doku' (enjoying quiet indoor activities on rainy days), so I can't just sit and read a book while listening to music. Although it will be summer as soon as the rainy season ends, I have not yet finished taking care of the tropical and subtropical plants that have been growing over the winter. In addition, I have started playing video games. My already busy days have become even busier recently. Anyway, I'm having fun every day, and that's what's important.
The other day, after seeing some of Apple's iOS 18 content, I felt that everyone else has such a busy life that they needed something useful like that. It's hard work, isn't it? I also thought that I didn't need it, but of course, I'm not uninterested (I have a feeling I might buy an iPad, macOS Sequoia).
An important passage from the Gosho to keep in mind is: "Although I and my disciples may encounter various difficulties, if we do not harbor doubts in our hearts, we will as a matter of course attain Buddhahood" (The Opening of the Eyes, p.238).

Wednesday May 29th, 2024 (6th Reiwa).

We went to the “Exhibition of Stories of Food and Life” on Sunday, April 28th (held by Soka Gakkai). It was a small event but had excellent content. My grandchildren had a lot of fun, and so did I.
My daughter's family and I visited the Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Garden on Wednesday, May 1st. No wonder the place was very crowded during Golden Week. (I like rhinoceros.)
I went to the 70th Anniversary Concert by Arima Thoru and Noche Cubana with a guest appearance by Linda Yamamoto (held by MIN-ON) on Tuesday, May 14th. They are around 70 but still young. So am I. Music makes us feel ten years younger.

I went to a Concert, "Sarah Àlainn Quartet MAY there be Harmony" (held by MIN-ON) on Sunday, May 19th. I couldn't believe my eyes for a moment at that instant. She was just“Maetel (In THE GALAXY EXPRESS 999)” herself, really! Therefore, I was revived by their live music. It is just the power of music.

Thus, during this period, I am busy every year. I was unhappy from the viewpoint of common sense, but there arose a great feeling of satisfaction and fulfillment at the same wonderful.

Friday April 12th, 2024 (6th Reiwa).

On April 5th, I attended the comedy show held by Min-on, titled "Asakusa Comedy Big March" (link to the Japanese site). Whenever there is laughter, there is happiness. The laughter put me in a relaxed state.
The maximum temperature was 25°C on March 31st, which is typical for summer temperatures in Japan. In fact, winter is over at that time and then spring has just arrived. Today's maximum tenparature was 24.0℃ in this connection.
Speaking of spring, I remember the following passage: “Those who believe in the Lotus Sutra are as if in winter, but winter always turns to spring” (To the lay nun Myōichi, 1275).
Cherry blossoms are famous in Japan during spring. Speaking of cherry blossoms, I remember "The principle of cherry, plum, peach and damson (link for annotation)", which is one of the most popular passages among Japanese members. May spring bring hope to people all over the world.

After a long time, I went to Central Japan International Airport (Centrair) on April 10th to see my daughter's family off. I wondered if it was such a small airport.

Wednesday March 13th, 2024 (6th Reiwa).

I have been feeling that my body is heavy recently, due to aging. On the other hand, members of ZATSUGI always seem to handle their bodies lightly. It's hard to believe they are the same person. The show was always met with cheers and applause. Wonderful!
On March 10th, I attended the Mion-on concert featuring “MIRACLE☆ZATSUGI.”

I have still taken to heart the following passage from Nichiren's writings known as the Gosho (The Opening of the Eyes, 1272): "Whether tempted by good or threatened by evil, if one casts aside the Lotus Sutra, one destines oneself for hell."
In other than the above passage, I have taken to heart several of those mentioned previously: "... Though the water is the same, it appears differently according to one’s karmic reward from the past.… (Reply to the Lay Priest Soya, 1275)." and "Endure hardships and embrace pleasures. Accept both suffering and joy as part of life, and keep reciting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, no matter what. (Happiness in This World, 1276)".

On February 18th, I attended the Mion-on concert featuring the "Janoska Ensemble."
When I was young, I took to heart the following passage from Nichiren's writings known as the Gosho (On the Proper Way to Preach the Doctrine, 1269): "So you have gone to the capital, and before much time has passed you are changing your name, a piece of utter nonsense. No doubt you have also changed your way of speaking and acquired the accent of the capital."
I continually reaffirm our commitment to faith, ensuring that we understand the primacy of the mystic law over worldly laws.

At the end of last year, I went on a family vacation to Kanzan-ji Onsen, although it took two days and one night (since it was difficult for all of the fewer than 20 of us to attend). The photo on the left is of the Ferris wheel at the amusement park just after sunrise (7 am).
I take to heart the sentence, “... Though the water is the same, it appears differently according to one’s karmic reward from the past.…” from Nichiren's writings known as the Gosho (Reply to the Lay Priest Soya, 1275).
So, I always need to recognize that what I see is not the whole picture. At the same time, even if we appear to be looking at the same thing, others may not always see it the same way I do. This is the ordinary way of thinking for me.

Freiday December 13th, 2023, (Fifth Reiwa)

On December 10th, I attended the Indian dance musical “Mumbai☆Star,” an original production by Min-On and supported by the Embassy of India Tokyo.

When I was a teenager, I met Daisaku Ikeda Sensei at a summer course held for the student section around 1970, shortly after I joined the Soka Gakkai.
At the event during the summer course, Ikeda Sensei handed something to each member, saying to them, "It's hot, so here, have something cold to eat." Many students gathered around Sensei, moving slowly in a whirlpool around Ikeda Sensei. When that vortex (Ikeda Sensei) came close to me, I extended my hand to try to make my way through the crowd. I felt something in my hand and squeezed it.
When the whirlpool (the group around Sensei) moved away, I was finally able to pull my arm out of the crowd. I then opened my palm and found a thin piece of plastic (see photo). It was, of course, a ticket to buy shaved ice. I ate the shaved ice but paid for it using cash from my wallet instead of using the ticket.
In this way, the yellow square piece of plastic has remained with me and has been my treasure (thus I can't lose it absolutely). I keep it close to me wherever I go.

Monday Nobember 13th, 2023, (Fifth Reiwa)

In early November, I attended the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu Gongyo Session at the Diaseido (Hall of the Great Vow for Kosen-rufu) in Tokyo. The weather in Nagoya and Tokyo was warm and mild for November (OK without a jacket). Nagoya station was crowded, but only in the morning, as it was the first day of the three consecutive holidays (Tokyo always seems to be very crowded for those who come to Tokyo from regional cities).

I attended a Min-On concert titled "RAJATON JAPAN Tours 2023” on November 12th (which is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the founding of Min-On.). In mid-November, it gets cold even in Nagoya, with a minimum temperature of 8°C and a maximum of about 15°C. So even though the concert started at 3:00 p.m., I wore a jacket.

Wednesday October 11th, 2023, (Fifth Reiwa).

I attended a Min-On concert titled "Healing Hawaiian Music and Hula Dance" on September 3. This concert commemorated the 60th anniversary of the founding of Min-On and the 155th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Hawaii, as well as the 170th anniversary of Japan-U.S. relations.

I visited my sixth grandson's kindergarten for a field day with my seventh grandson, who came home on October 7th, on a beautiful fall day. These events, which occur twice in spring and autumn in Japan, are a great source of joy for grandparents, not to mention parents. Of course, with delight, we watched his activities as he ran and danced. Our spirits gradually cleared, much like the sky today. This is happiness for everyone, and therefore, anyone who brings about war is like a devil.

Monday Septenber 4th, 2023, (Fifth Reiwa).

The buddhability.org posted the podcast "What does Buddhism say about dealing with grief? (EPISODE 120)” on August 25. It happened to be my father’s birthday, who passed away twelve years ago, but it doesn't hold any particular significance.
My wife passed away in January. I grieved deeply due to this loss until April. However, as a practicing Buddhist, I firmly believe that she has already been reborn into this world. This belief is rooted in the philosophy of "Life and Death Are One (Episode posted on May 10, 2021)”, which is also known as transmigration in Buddhism.
All trains on the Takayama Line (from Gifu to Toyama) were replaced with the new HC85 model (Link in Japanese) after March of this year, featuring a hybrid (engine+motor+battery) drive (Link in Japanese). Thus, I had the opportunity to board the "HIDA (HC85)" express train in August. In essence, I embarked on a rail journey to the spa with my daughter's family, totalling about twenty people.
I attended the MIN-ON concert titled "Jasmine Choi's Flute Recital (Link in Japanese) ," where she performed alongside pianist Toshiki Usui. She (Jasmine Choi) shared a photo of the event on social media, and I happened to be in the photo. It was my first experience attending a flute solo concert. I was amazed by how beautiful the sound of her flute was, as I had only ever heard the sound of the flute on a vinyl record of Rampal's performance a long time ago.

The events in August were ordinary as mentioned above, but these brought some pleasure and peaceful minds for me. So I thank this world.

Monday August 7th, 2023, (Fifth Reiwa).

Last month, I watched a show on NHK (Japan's Broadcasting Corporation) called "Philosophical Street Interviews (Japanese)." They asked 92 people, "What is the purpose of your life?" Here's what they said: 26% for family, 20% for enjoying life, 17% didn't know, and 37% for different reasons.
Right now, my answer is: "I want to keep living because my life right now is interesting. I try to stay alive for as long as I can because I don't want to die." However, when I was younger, I tried to live for my mother because I knew she would be sad if I passed away. Later on, I aimed to make my wife happy (though I'm not sure if she really was), because I included her in my life through marriage. After my children were born, my focus shifted to raising them until they could stand on their own. Now that I've fulfilled all these responsibilities, including my parents' funerals, as I mentioned earlier, my life itself is captivating. Even if I lived for another thousand or even ten thousand years, it probably wouldn't feel like enough. And of course, even if I lived for over 100 million years, it still might not be enough. That's how fascinating life is for me at this moment. That's why I don't want to die. So, my goal is to simply avoid dying and keep on living. That's the sole reason I want to stay alive.
When I compare my responses to the results of the earlier survey, I find that, like 26% of the respondents, I have lived most of my life for my family (Of course, I have no regrets. Conversely, I am proud of myself). Additionally, during the last half of my years, I have been living to enjoy life (20%). A notable portion of this delight presently comes from observing the growth of my three younger grandchildren (who are not yet in school). Furthermore, my four elder grandchildren have attained self-sufficiency, as I oversee them. From the vantage point of aging, I have come to understand the truth that aging is never so wrong.
I think that the four ideas in Nichiren’s teachings are important in my life: "Voluntarily assuming the appropriate karma," "Lessening one’s karmic retribution," "Substituting faith for wisdom," and "Myo-no-shoran."
Additionally, in Nichiren's writings known as the Gosho, I like "Happiness in This World." It says: "Endure hardships and embrace pleasures. Accept both suffering and joy as part of life, and keep reciting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, no matter what. Could this be anything other than the endless happiness of the Law? Strengthen your faith even more.” The "Happiness in This World" is the Gosho for Zadankai held in August, 2023.

2023年07月10日

Monday July 10th, 2023, (Fifth Reiwa).

I have been retired for 7 years now and have never really felt like I had more free time, because I had a lot of things I had to do for my family, not for myself. However, in the past 15 years, I have accomplished everything that I needed to do and was responsible for. Three months have passed since I was discharged from the hospital in April, and with the help of my daughters, I have become accustomed to living "alone" (which is a first experience in my life, of course).
The other day, I spent four hours listening to music and reading. I think I might enjoy this kind of leisure time. I also thought that I might be happy to have this kind of time once a week.
Actually, I have another favorite time of the day. It's a habit I started right after I retired. It is my 30-minute morning routine, which has recently been extended to about 45 minutes. This routine takes place after breakfast. However, I use mouthwash immediately after waking up. It is my time for the usual self-care routine, starting with oral care using an interdental brush and toothbrush, and ending with shaving.
Oh, yes. I attended the MIN-ON concert called "Swedish Harmony (The Vokalharmonin vocal ensemble and The Uppsala Chamber Soloists)" by myself this month (Really, it has been a while since I last attended a concert, hasn't it?).
Due to the loss of my wife of many years, I am alone now. I live a leisurely and liberated life, but I am by no means unhappy (in fact, that might be happiness).
Now, "They trample on the weak, while they look ecstatic, and lie and say that this is the reason of the world. I would not wish for a world in which those shameless people can walk around with their heads held high, even if it kills me. I will defy them. If they still try to trample on the weak, I will cut off their feet." This sentence is a passage from "Yoshinochou-Zantou-Den 27" by Amano Sumiki (p. 287, April issue of a journal USIO).
The state of life of the "shameless people" referred to here must be exactly the four evil paths possessed in the human world (in the mutual possession of the Ten Worlds). And the "world in which they walk brazenly" must be the Latter Day of the Law itself. In such a world, I would not even wish it. The way to "get out of the way" of such a world would be to manifest the life states of the Four Saints, especially the Bodhisattvas, in this world (first of all, by myself, of course).
But since their state of life is the four evil paths, it is obvious that they will "still try to trample on us. What should we do? Even if we "cut off their feet" as we all know, this problem will not be fundamentally solved (due to the sheer number of opponents).
But it is important to "resist" (through acts of disobedience), and furthermore, it should be non-violent, as Gandhi said. However, I may not be able to do so (because even if I could temporarily manifest the Bodhisattva world, I would surely fall into the realm of asuras that exist within the human world, once I touch certain edges).

Thursday, June 15th, 2023, (Fifth Reiwa).

Last July, I wrote a short article titled "What Man Needs: Science (Interest), Religion (Goodness), and Art (Beauty)," and I briefly explained the following points: Science must be for the benefit of humanity. Therefore, "nuclear weaponization" cannot be the subject of research. Religion should be the standard of right and wrong. Therefore, there can be no religion that affirms warfare (murderousness). Art should provide people with a glimpse into the depths of the world (universe) in which they live and the state of their own lives. Despite all the suffering in their lifetime, it should give them motivation to live (Japanese).
Civilization grows through confronting and responding to the challenges of trials. Life is no different. We face challenges that frequently assail us, and we must rise to the occasion, confront them, and overcome them. By achieving victory, we shape our lives. Through this process, individuals become stronger, and that resilient strength becomes an essential force and an effective weapon for facing the next trial.
My driving force to win that constant battle is always chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to the Gohonzon every day and every time, as I mentioned last month.

Tuesday, May 9 Reiwa 5 (2023).

Drafting a speech for my daughters and their families on my 72nd birthday.
Last year, do you remember talking about my epitaph? I remember watching the movie "Back to the Future" and seeing the letters on the tombstone disappear, which made me want to think about my own epitaph. The date on my epitaph was actually July 24th, 2023, and it has become a true dream. I died in January of this year, marking my third death in life.
Just like a famous general once said "I shall return," I too would like to say that I have returned to meet you all with eternal love. I should mention that I have come back to this world four times due to unknown forces of the universe.
Therefore, I believe that I should tell you everything I know about these unknown forces of the universe. The driving force of my life was chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to the Gohonzon every day and every time.
If we do not harbor doubts in our hearts, we will as a matter of course attain Buddhahood" (p283, The Opening of the Eyes).
